Special Needs Coordinator

Anita Conkey

Scripture Union wants to make God’s Good News known to ALL children. Some 5000 + pupils with additional learning needs and disabilities attend special schools in Northern Ireland. Through specialist provision these schools seek to meet needs, address learning difficulties and maximize the development of each child to his or her full potential. At the end of our first two years building more intentional relations and schools work in the SEN (Special Educational Needs) sector, we have strong, positive working relations with 50–60% of the 40 Special schools. Children and young people at Primary and Post–Primary level, with physical, moderate and severe cognitive as well as multiple and profound learning difficulties are having the opportunity to meet God, engage with the Bible and his words of love and of promise. In every class there are children made “in the image of God”, divine ‘imagebearers’. Scripture Union schoolsworkers are experiencing the joy, challenge and privilege of working with a different group of unique and precious pupils.
