 Millburn Connect

Millburn is a new joint initiative between Scripture Union and local churches, taking place in the Millburn estate in Coleraine with the aim of sharing Jesus with local communities.

The project with start off with a children's club running each Tuesday evening from 6 - 7.30pm in Millburn Community Centre.  We'll have games, small groups, music, craft, Bible teaching and tea-coffee for parents - all aiming to connect the church with the local community and helping them to know Jesus' love.

Do you have a heart for reaching local communities?  Do you live in the Coleraine area?  Could you give up an hour and a half each week for six weeks at a time?  Then get in touch!  We would love to have you on board.

North Coast churches get together...

26 September 2011 saw the first Scripture Union training night for the North Coast churches, held at Portstewart Baptist Church.  We were incredibly encouraged to see over 100 people from over 20 different churches attend the training, eager to learn more about how to connect with children and young people.

As Scripture Union we want to see lives changed, and we know that this is the desire of the church throughout Northern Ireland - and so we wanted to come alongside volunteers from the local church, to share the same vision and the same heart.

3 training sessions were held on the night -

Creative Bible Communication with Children-

This session was led by Jenny Law - our North Coast Schools Worker.  Jenny's session was really practical and tailored for those working with primary school aged children.  It covered things like sharing the Bible in a large group, in a one-to-one situation and in small groups.  Jenny also looked at story-telling, learning styles, practical activities, and discussing what the Bible tells us about being effective as we share the truth with children.

Communicating the Bible with Teenagers-

This session was led by Mark Hawthorne - our E3 Schools Worker for Antrim.  This was another practical session looking at working with teenagers in both small and large group settings. Mark helped us to think through the culture of young people today, and what difference, if any, this makes on how we share God's word with them.

Developing Others-

Finally, Helen Warnock, the General Director of SUNI, took a session on developing people around you, whether it's the people you lead or those you lead alongside.  She covered how to spot and develop potential in others, and encouraged us to think about what makes a good leader and how we can be a person of influence with those we work with.

We hope to organise further training sessions like the one described above, so keep your eyes on our website for updates over the coming months!
